Scale a recipe up or down with AI
Paste the recipe you want to change into ChatGPT or Claude, say how many servings you need (for example, cook for two instead of eight), and ask for a rewritten ingredient list plus a note on any step that does not scale evenly. Double-check baking recipes yourself: pan size, time and leaveners often need judgment beyond simple math.
The problem
Many recipes serve six or eight when you cook for one or two, or they serve two when you are feeding a crowd. Doing the math by hand is easy to get wrong, especially with fractions like 1/3 cup or odd can sizes.
Why AI helps
AI is quick at arithmetic and at rewriting a full ingredient list so you can cook from one clean version. The useful extra ask is: "Which steps should I not scale one-for-one?" That surfaces pan size, cook time and baking chemistry before you waste a cake.
Step by step
- Copy the full recipe (ingredients and steps) from your card, book or site. Leave out personal notes that are not part of the recipe.
- Paste the scale prompt and fill in the original servings and the servings you want.
- Read the scaled list and the "watch outs" section before you shop or preheat.
- For baking, ask the follow-up about pan size and time rather than assuming the oven time stays the same.
- Save the scaled version in a note or in your Kitchen Project so you do not redo the math next time.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
Scale this recipe
Here is a recipe that serves [original number]. I want it to serve [new number]. Please rewrite the full ingredient list with the new amounts, keep the steps in the same order, and add a short "Watch outs" section for anything that may not scale evenly (pan size, cook time, salt, spices, baking powder/soda, eggs). Recipe: [paste full recipe]
Cook for two
Rewrite this recipe for two people. Prefer amounts I can buy without leaving a lot of waste (for example, half an onion is fine; tell me what to do with the rest). Flag any ingredient that is awkward to buy in a tiny amount.
Then try
Put the scaled ingredients in a simple checklist. Then tell me what changes if I use a [smaller/larger] pan.
Limits and safety
- Baking is not pure arithmetic. Cakes, breads and cookies can fail if you only multiply; treat AI scaling as a draft and use a trusted baking source when the recipe matters.
- Salt, hot pepper, garlic and leaveners often need tasting or caution rather than exact multiplication.
- AI can misread fractions or miss a line when you paste poorly. Compare the scaled list to the original once.
- Food safety still applies: cook meats and leftovers to safe temperatures.
