Plan your vegetable garden with AI
Gather three facts (where you live, your space, and hours of direct sun), paste them into ChatGPT or Claude with what you want to grow, and ask for what to plant, how many fit, a simple layout and rough timing. Then confirm planting dates with your local cooperative extension office, because local conditions vary.
The problem
Every year starts with big plans and ends with six tomato plants crammed in a corner. Spacing, layout and timing are hard to work out from seed packets alone.
Why AI helps
AI can fit your wish list to your actual space and sun, sketch a text layout and answer as many beginner questions as you have. It's general advice, so pair it with local sources: the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map for your zone and your state's extension service for planting dates.
Step by step
- Write down your city and state, your space (for example, one 4-by-8-foot raised bed) and roughly how many hours of direct sun it gets.
- Optional: look up your zone on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map and add it to the prompt.
- Paste the garden prompt and read the plan.
- Ask follow-ups: a month-by-month checklist, pest help, ways to make it easier on your back.
- Save the plan. Next spring, paste it back with notes on what worked and ask what to change.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
Plan the garden
Please be my friendly garden planning helper. I'm a [beginner / casual / experienced] gardener. Here are my details: - I live in: [city, state] - My space: [describe it] - Sun: [hours of direct sun, or "full sun" / "part shade"] - I'd love to grow: [for example, "tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and something for salads"] - I don't want: [for example, "anything that needs a lot of daily work"] Please suggest what to plant, how many of each will fit, a simple layout, and roughly when to plant for my area. Keep it beginner-friendly and in plain English.
Month-by-month
Can you make me a simple month-by-month checklist for this garden, from spring planting to fall cleanup?
Easier on your body
I have a bad back. What are some ways to make this garden easier on my body?
Shady spot
I have a spot in my yard in [city, state] that only gets about [number] hours of sun a day. Can you suggest 5 low-maintenance plants (flowers or vegetables) that would do well there? Please tell me which ones are easiest for a beginner.
Limits and safety
- Local knowledge wins. Planting dates and pests vary a lot by area; your extension office and garden center know your area best.
- Before spraying anything the AI suggests, read the label and ask at the garden center, especially with pets or grandkids around.
- Photo identification of weeds or sick leaves is a good guess, not gospel.
