Cook hands-free with AI voice mode
Open the ChatGPT or Claude app, tap the voice button in the message box, allow the microphone, and talk: read it your recipe and ask it to walk you through one step at a time. Voice works on both free plans, with limits (ChatGPT Free has limited daily voice use; in Claude, voice counts toward your regular usage limit).
The problem
Recipes on a phone are hard to follow with messy hands: the screen locks, you lose your place, and you can't type a quick "what can I use instead of buttermilk?"
Why AI helps
Voice mode lets you have a spoken back-and-forth conversation. Claude's help page describes it as useful "when your hands are busy but your mind isn't." In the kitchen, that means steps read aloud, timers you can ask about, and substitution questions without washing your hands.
Does this work on the free plan?
- ChatGPT free: Voice is available on the Free plan with limited daily use (measured over a rolling 24 hours). OpenAI doesn't publish the exact amount, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach the limit.
- Claude free: Voice mode is a beta feature on all plans, including Free, on the phone apps, desktop and web. Claude says it works best on your phone. Voice conversations count toward your regular usage limits.
- Where to tap: ChatGPT: the Voice icon in the message bar. Claude: the sound-wave icon next to the microphone in the message box.
Step by step
- Prop your phone or tablet somewhere safe from splashes, away from the stove.
- ChatGPT: open the app and tap the Voice icon in the message bar. Claude: open the app and tap the sound-wave icon next to the microphone in the message box.
- If your phone asks to use the microphone, tap Allow. The first time, pick a voice you like.
- Say the first prompt below out loud, then read or paste in your recipe. (Before you start, you can paste the recipe as text in a regular chat, then switch to voice in the same chat.)
- Talk as you go: "Next step," "How long now?" "What can I use instead of...?" To stop, tap the end or Stop button. Noisy kitchen? Claude has a push-to-talk mode, and ChatGPT suggests headphones or a quieter spot.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
Walk me through it (say this)
I'm cooking [dish] from a recipe. I'll read you the recipe. Then walk me through it one step at a time. Wait until I say "next" before giving the next step, and remind me about anything I should start early, like preheating the oven.
Substitution (say this)
I'm out of [ingredient]. What can I use instead in this recipe, and how much?
Before you start (type this)
Here's the recipe I'm making: [paste recipe]. List everything I need to get out before I start, grouped by fridge, pantry and tools.
Limits and safety
- Voice transcripts aren't word-for-word, and AI can mishear. Double-check amounts for baking and anything you're unsure of.
- Food safety comes from reliable sources, not the chat. For leftovers and storage, see the USDA's guidance.
- Voice use has limits on free plans. If it stops, you can keep going by typing.
- Keep the phone away from heat and water.
