Identify a plant or sick leaf from a photo with AI
Take a clear, close photo, tap the + button in ChatGPT or Claude, add the photo, and ask what it might be and what to check next. Both free plans let you add photos (ChatGPT's free plan allows 3 file uploads a day). Treat the answer as a good guess and confirm with your local extension office or garden center before pulling, spraying or eating anything.
The problem
A weed you don't recognize, yellow spots on the tomato leaves, a volunteer seedling you're not sure about. Describing a plant in words is hard, and garden books don't always show the stage you're looking at.
Why AI helps
Both assistants can look at a photo you add to the chat and describe what they see. That gives you a starting point and the right words to search or to ask at the garden center. This is the photo tip from Issue #4, written out step by step.
Does this work on the free plan?
- ChatGPT free: Photo uploads work on the Free plan, with limits. OpenAI's help page says free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day, and limits may be lower at busy times. Photos can be PNG, JPEG or non-animated GIF, up to 20 MB each.
- Claude free: Claude's upload help page lists photo uploads (JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP) in regular chats and doesn't limit them to paid plans. Free plans have overall usage limits.
- Where to tap: ChatGPT: the + icon in the message box, then "Add photos & files." Claude: the + button at the lower left of the chat box, then "Add files or photos."
Step by step
- Take the photo in good daylight. Get close enough that the leaf or flower fills most of the picture. A second photo of the whole plant helps.
- Open the ChatGPT app (or the Claude app) and tap New chat.
- ChatGPT: tap the + icon in the message box, then Add photos & files, and pick your photo. Claude: tap the + button at the lower left of the chat box, then Add files or photos. The first time, your phone may ask permission to use your photos; tap Allow.
- Paste the prompt below into the message box and tap the arrow to send.
- Ask the follow-ups, then take the photo and the AI's guess to your extension office or garden center to confirm.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
What is this?
This photo is from my garden in [city, state], taken in [month]. What might this plant be? Give me your top 2 or 3 guesses, how confident you are in each, and what I could look at (leaves, stem, flowers) to tell them apart. If it could be harmful to people or pets, say so.
What's wrong with this leaf?
This is a leaf from my [plant, for example "tomato"] in [city, state]. What are the most common causes of what you see? List gentle, non-chemical things to try first, and tell me when I should ask an expert instead.
Next step
What should I photograph or check next to narrow this down?
Limits and safety
- A photo guess is not gospel. Don't eat a wild plant or mushroom based on what an AI says.
- Before spraying anything, read the label and ask at the garden center, especially with pets or grandkids around.
- On ChatGPT's free plan you get 3 uploads a day, so pick your best photo.
- Photos can show more than you mean to. Keep house numbers, faces and car plates out of the frame.
