Get a weekly garden check-in from ChatGPT with scheduled tasks

In ChatGPT, ask it to send you a garden check-in every week (for example, Saturday morning), and it creates a scheduled task. Free accounts can have up to 3 active tasks, each running at most once a day, at a flexible time like "morning" rather than an exact minute. Turn on notifications so you actually see it.

The problem

Gardens reward small, regular attention: watering, checking for pests, succession planting. Then life gets busy and you notice the aphids three weeks late.

Why AI helps

A scheduled task is a reminder that also thinks. Instead of an alarm that just says "garden," ChatGPT can send a short, seasonal checklist for your area each week. You set it up once by asking in plain words.

Does this work on the free plan?

  • ChatGPT free: Scheduled tasks are available on the Free plan. OpenAI's help page says Free accounts can have up to 3 active tasks, can schedule a one-time task or a recurring task no more than once per day, and use flexible windows such as morning, afternoon or night. Exact times and hourly tasks need a paid plan.
  • Not supported: Scheduled tasks don't work inside voice chats or GPTs. A task created inside a project can't use that project's files.
  • Claude: This guide covers ChatGPT only.

Step by step

  1. Go to chatgpt.com or open the ChatGPT app and sign in. Tap New chat (a regular chat, not voice).
  2. Paste the weekly check-in prompt below with your city and garden, and tap the arrow to send. ChatGPT should confirm the task it created.
  3. Turn on notifications: tap your profile icon, then Settings, then Notifications, and choose Push, Email, or both. On a phone, tap Allow if it asks to send notifications.
  4. To see, pause, edit or delete the task later, open Scheduled in the sidebar. You can also get there from Settings, then Notifications, then Manage tasks.
  5. Remember the free limit of 3 active tasks. Pause or delete one before adding another.

Weekly garden check-in

Every Saturday morning, send me a short garden check-in for my garden in [city, state]. I grow [for example, "tomatoes, peppers and lettuce in one raised bed"]. Include: what to check this week (water, pests, harvest), one seasonal task for my area, and a reminder to check the forecast for frost or heat. Keep it under 8 bullet points.

One-time reminder

On [date], remind me to [for example, "plant garlic"] and give me 3 quick tips for doing it in [city, state].

Change it

Change my garden check-in to Sunday afternoon and add a reminder to clean bird feeders once a month.

Limits and safety

  • The free plan runs tasks at flexible times (morning, afternoon or night), not an exact minute.
  • Advice for "your area" is general. Your cooperative extension office knows your local frost dates and pests best.
  • If a task stops, it may have paused for inactivity or because its chat was deleted. Check Scheduled.
  • If you share a task link, anyone with it can read the instructions, so keep your address and personal details out.
