Set up a Golf Coach Project in ChatGPT or Claude
Create a project named Golf Coach in ChatGPT or Claude, paste a short golfer profile into its instructions, and start every golf chat inside it. You set it up once (about 10 minutes) and it already knows your age, handicap, typical miss and physical limits.
The problem
Every time you open a new chat you have to explain your game again: how old you are, what you shoot, your usual miss, your bad knee. Most people skip that, and the advice that comes back is generic.
Why AI helps
AI gives better answers when it knows who it is helping. A Project stores those details as standing instructions, so every chat starts with your profile. Our profile also tells the AI how to coach: ask questions first, give one fix at a time, send health questions to a doctor and rules questions to the rule book.
Step by step
- Sign in at chatgpt.com or claude.ai (or the phone app). Pick one tool to start.
- ChatGPT: select New project in the sidebar and name it Golf Coach. Claude: click Projects (or go to claude.ai/projects), then + New Project. Claude doesn't read the project name or description, so your details go in the instructions.
- Fill in the Golfer Profile prompt below. ChatGPT: open the project, click the ••• menu, choose Project settings, paste it into the instructions and save. Claude: click Set project instructions, paste, then Save instructions.
- Optional: add files such as lesson notes, a yardage list or a scorecard photo. Leave out your address and medical records.
- Open Golf Coach first, then start a new chat. Use one chat per topic: one for your slice, one for this week's practice plan.
- When a chat produces something worth keeping (a drill that worked, a post-round review), save it as a project file. This matters most in Claude, where chats in a project don't see each other.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
Golfer Profile (paste into the project instructions, not a chat)
Act as my patient, encouraging golf coach. Use plain language and simple steps. Ask me a few questions before giving advice. Give one main fix at a time. If something might be a health issue, tell me to check with my doctor. For rules questions, tell me which rule to look up and confirm. About me: - Age: [your age] - Right- or left-handed: [right/left] - Handicap or typical score: [for example, "around 95"] - How often I play: [for example, "twice a week"] - Typical miss: [for example, "slice with driver, thin with irons"] - Driver distance (rough): [for example, "about 200 yards"] - Physical limits: [for example, "stiff lower back," or "none"] - My goals: [for example, "break 90, have more fun"] - Time I can practice: [for example, "one hour a week"] - Home course: [name, plus anything tricky about it] If I've uploaded files to this project (lesson notes, scorecards, yardages), use them too.
Your first chat inside the project
Based on my profile, what's the one area most likely to save me strokes?
Limits and safety
- Menus change. If a button looks different, look for the word "Project."
- Plan limits differ: ChatGPT free accounts can add up to 5 files per project; Claude free accounts can create up to 5 projects.
- Update the instructions when your game changes (new clubs, new injury, lower handicap) so advice stays on target.
- On ChatGPT, if "Improve the model for everyone" is on, project content may be used for training. Keep personal details out.
