Fix a slice with AI as your between-lessons coach

Describe your ball flight to ChatGPT or Claude (where it starts, how it curves, which clubs), ask it to question you about grip, setup and aim before advising, then ask for the most likely cause and one drill. It works from your description only, so be specific and confirm big changes with a PGA pro.

Time: About 5 minutes · Tools: ChatGPT or Claude, ideally inside your Golf Coach Project · By Austin Christensen · Last updated

The problem

A slice (a ball that curves hard right for a right-handed golfer, left for a lefty) costs distance and balls. Tips from playing partners often contradict each other, and a lesson isn't always available when the problem shows up.

Why AI helps

Talking it through the way you'd describe it to a pro gets you a structured diagnosis. The key is making the AI ask questions first, so it narrows down causes instead of listing every tip it knows. This is how Austin uses Claude between lessons, and it's the method behind Issue #1 of the newsletter.

Using Projects: Projects are folders that remember your instructions. Per the official help pages (checked October 13, 2026): ChatGPT Projects are available to signed-in users and free accounts can add up to 5 files per project; Claude Projects are available on free accounts, which can create up to 5 projects. In Claude, chats in a project don't share context unless the information is in the project knowledge. See how to set one up.

Step by step

  1. Open your Golf Coach Project, or start a new chat and paste the role prompt below first.
  2. Describe the miss like you would to a buddy: where the ball starts, where it ends up, which clubs, and when it's worse.
  3. Answer its questions in plain words. "I don't know" is a fine answer.
  4. Ask for one fix, not five. Take a single drill to the range and try it with half swings before full swings.
  5. Follow up: ask what you should feel if the drill is working, or for a one-thought cue for the course.

Set the role (skip this if you use a Golf Coach Project)

I'd like you to act as a friendly, patient golf coach. I'm a [age]-year-old golfer with about a [your handicap, or "I don't keep a handicap"] and I play about [how often]. I'm going to describe a problem with my game. Before you give advice, please ask me 2 or 3 questions to understand what's going on. Keep your explanations simple, with no technical jargon.

The Slice Fixer

My ball slices. With [club], the ball usually starts [left/straight/right] and curves [description]. It happens [always/sometimes/only when I swing hard]. Before you give advice, ask me 3-4 questions about my grip, setup, and ball flight. Then give me the most likely cause and ONE simple drill I can try at the range.

Then try

What should I feel if the drill is working?

For the course

What should I think about on the course, during a round, so I don't get too technical? Give me just one simple swing thought.

Limits and safety

  • The AI can't see your swing. A pro watching in person will catch more.
  • If something hurts, stop, and ask a doctor or pro before changing anything that causes pain.
  • If the answer is too technical, type: "Can you explain that more simply?"
  • Answers vary. You and a friend can paste the same prompt and get different drills. That's normal.
