Ask AI golf rules questions, then confirm them
Describe what happened on the course and ask ChatGPT or Claude for your options, the penalty and the rule number to look up. Then confirm in the official Rules of Golf from the USGA (or The R&A outside the US and Mexico), because AI can get rules wrong.
The problem
Rules situations (a ball in a penalty area, an unplayable lie) cause arguments and slow play, and the rule book is hard to search in plain English.
Why AI helps
AI is good at translating a situation you describe into plain-language options. The part that makes it trustworthy is asking for the rule number, so you can check the official text instead of trusting the answer.
Using Projects: Projects are folders that remember your instructions. Per the official help pages (checked October 13, 2026): ChatGPT Projects are available to signed-in users and free accounts can add up to 5 files per project; Claude Projects are available on free accounts, which can create up to 5 projects. In Claude, chats in a project don't share context unless the information is in the project knowledge. See how to set one up.
Step by step
- Describe the situation precisely: where the ball is, what color stakes or lines, what you've already done.
- Paste the Rules Made Easy prompt and ask for the rule number.
- Look up that rule on usga.org/rules (or randa.org outside the US and Mexico) and confirm.
- Use the follow-up to get a short summary you can share with your playing partners.
- For practice, ask it to quiz you on rules one question at a time on a rainy day.
Copy-paste prompts
Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details. AI answers vary from person to person, so we don't show a "typical" answer here; try it and see what you get.
Rules Made Easy
Here's what happened on the course: [describe, for example "my ball went into a red-staked area"]. What are my options under the current Rules of Golf, and what's the penalty? Explain simply, and tell me which rule number to look up so I can confirm it.
Then try
Give me a quick summary I can tell my playing partners.
Rainy-day rules quiz
It's raining and I can't play. Quiz me on the Rules of Golf one question at a time and tell me if I'm right. Include the rule number with each answer so I can check it.
Limits and safety
- AI can be confidently wrong about rules. The official Rules of Golf has the final word.
- Your course may have local rules. Check the scorecard or ask the pro shop.
- In competition, confirm with an official rather than an app.
